ACL repair
ACL is one of the most common operations and with a high rate of success. ACL injuries can also be very suitable for non-operative management. A high quality repair with a low rate of failure needs individualised assessment. In this time of financial strain understanding your occupation, return to work needs and the mechanical stress of your lifestyle is very important.
An understanding of the mechanics involved in your sport (especially pivoting movements) and your desired level of return to sport is also important in making repair decision. Elite athletes or those needing to return to work early may need a different approach than those who participate in straight line activities such as cycling, swimming and golf.
ACL injuries in Children and Adolescents
Children and adolescents have a different injury pattern & surgical approach to adult ACL injuries. Prevention is the best approach; with prevention programs needing to be embedded within schools and clubs. However, we are seeing increasing numbers of children and adolescents with this injury due to involvement in sports with pivoting movements.
Dr Gray has a paediatric orthopaedic fellowship in addition to his knee fellowships. He can provide assessment and shared decision making on conservative versus surgical management. He will work with your team to ensure pre and post rehabilitation care for this special group of patients.
Trauma and Fractures due to sports injuries
All fractures of the lower limb can be managed by Dr Gray. Transfers from public & private hospitals can be facilitated.
Infections
Urgent investigation and treatment of infection involving joints and tendons
Your treating doctor needs to contact Dr Gray directly as soon as possible when infection or fracture of a prosthesis is identified, including superficial infections of skin.
Non-operative care
It is sometimes said that "the good surgeons know how to operate, better ones know when to operate and the best surgeons know when not to operate".
When the decision is made not to operate Dr Gray can co-ordinate the treatment plan on the Sunshine Coast. This may including physical therapy, pain relief & rehabilitation. Pain relief option can include injections steroids, hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation after sports injuries is also individualised. Dr Hamish Gray provides timely communication with your team including your physiotherapist, exercise physiologist, coaches, and sports physician. Return to mobility and sports needs to prevent re-injury and ensure long term success.
Upper Limb Sports Injuries
Dr Gray shares rooms with Dr Nikki Casey, who has a focus on upper limb surgery including finger, hand and wrist surgery.
