Is this an autonomous robot?
No, this is a robotic arm that works with Dr Gray
What is the problem that MAKOplasty addresses?
Joint replacements, especially hip joint replacements, are among the most successful operations performed in the world. However joint replacements still fail. One reason is when joint components are not aligned precisely.
Individualised
You are an individual. The shape of your bones, your supporting muscles and tendons are unique. How your arthritis, or other disease, affects your hip and knee joint is unique. This is an evolution on from what is already done with individualised surgical pre-planning from a 3D image made from a CT Scan
Precision
Robots working with surgeons allow precision to measure the angles and distances the human eye and hand cannot attain.
Why is this robotic and AI technique different from others?
An individualised avatar and surgical plan are created using a 3D image from a CT scan of the bones of your joint. Your avatar and pre-planning are uploaded into the robot. Dr Gray still holds the surgical instruments on the robotic arm, and the robot ensures that plan is followed with precision that a human hand and eye cannot attain. If you are interested in robotics, this is the only orthopaedic robot with haptic technology allowing sensory feedback. During surgery the behaviour of your soft tissues are assessed relative to the bones, allowing Dr Gray to adapt the plan to this information. This allows the components to be placed for optimum function.
Why choose this method and what can be the advantages?
- A more natural feeling joint replacement
- Greater preservation of healthy bone
- Less damage to muscles, tendons and nerves
- Less time in hospital
- Increased comfort during the recovery and rehabilitation
- Long term joint reliability due to precision surgery for your anatomy
